Mulled wine elevated

“The world’s finest mulled wine” gets a sequel.

Two years ago, Tegnér & Son launched the world-unique Grand Cru mulled wine, elevating the classic Swedish Christmas beverage to the highest culinary level. The five exclusive bottles, produced in collaboration with the Swedish National Culinary Team, caused Systembolaget’s online store to crash due to overwhelming demand on the launch day, December 7, 2022. A key factor? Each bottle was valued at 50,000 SEK. Since then, the project has evolved, and this November marks the first-time release of a mulled wine that, after 16 months of aging, offers both rich flavors and an affordable price.

This year, Tegnér & Son continues its tribute to Swedish mulled wine craftsmanship with the aged Tegnér & Son Extra Fine Fortified Mulled Wine. This year’s exclusive edition is the result of an even deeper collaboration with the Swedish National Culinary Team and its captain, Ida Bauhn.

Tegnér & Son Extra Fine Fortified Mulled Wine is the first mulled wine to be aged for 16 months, and according to winemaker Lars Torstensson, it has now reached its full potential.

“I am very proud that we have managed to create such an incredibly well-balanced mulled wine, and following its development over time has been truly fascinating,” says Ida Bauhn, captain of the Swedish National Culinary Team.

“Taking on the world’s most exclusive mulled wine experiment during the height of the 2022 inflation crisis was, to say the least, a challenge. However, at Tegnér & Son, we have taken mulled wine seriously since 1880, regardless of economic conditions. That’s why it feels particularly rewarding this year to meet our ambition with an aged version of our exclusive mulled wine. With pride—and a bit of luck—we see how a century-old tradition, innovative exclusivity, and declining inflation have given Sweden the chance to enjoy what may be the finest mulled wine ever produced, at a reasonable price,” says Pontus Tegnér, CEO of Tegnér & Son.

Traditional Mulled Wine Flavors Meet Organic Ingredients

Tegnér & Son Extra Fine Fortified Mulled Wine is inspired by the work the Swedish National Culinary Team did in 2022 with a world-class Grand Cru wine. The result is a highly artisanal and flavorful mulled wine made from organic Valpolicella Ripasso from Lake Garda, infused with traditional Christmas spices and flavors extracted from organic ingredients such as saffron, cocoa, and orange. The mulled wine has then been aged in bottles for 16 months to achieve the right maturity and flavor profile.

“Mulled wine can be interesting to age if it’s made from a high-quality wine. Given the exclusive base wine in Tegnér’s 2023 vintage mulled wine, it has benefited significantly from aging. In fact, its aging potential extends beyond just this year, so it may be worth considering buying a few extra bottles for next year or even the year after,” says Lars Torstenson, an internationally recognized winemaker.

Limited Quantity of Aged Mulled Wine Available

The aged vintage mulled wine is available in limited quantities, so it’s first come, first served. Orders can be placed via systembolaget.se, and on November 1, it will debut in selected Systembolaget stores across Sweden.

The price for this exclusive vintage mulled wine is 249 SEK, which is 99.5% cheaper than the Swedish National Culinary Team’s first mulled wine experiment with Tegnér & Son in 2022.
